How to build a tall garden or garden in the country

Not so long ago, we talked about high gardens in the country, their advantages and amenities for the person who processes such beds. Today we raise an even more interesting topic and tell readers how to build tall gardens and beds with your own hands.

At first glance, the formation of such a garden is a painful undertaking, which can take a lot of time, as well as some finances for the necessary materials. As for the time, we completely agree, because you will have to work hard to design the correct and practical beds. But there are practically no costs here, you may have to purchase boards, as well as special materials for drainage and additives to improve the soil mix.

There are several types of high beds that you can build on your own in the country. We will certainly describe each of them briefly, but more closely we will focus on the most practical form, thanks to which you can change the planting zone for the better, and also seriously increase the yield at the end of the season.

Types of high gardens

At the moment, professional summer residents distinguish several types of high gardens:

  • Bulk beds with a triangular section;
  • Bulk beds with a trapezoidal section;
  • High vegetable gardens in several tiers;
  • Decorative gardens with combined design;
  • High gardens and beds, implying the formation of soil using structures.

The first two types are standard, and you can make them without a special tool, using only a shovel or glanders. The following are more complex, but they are within the power of each of us.

Triangular high bulk gardens

Mounds are created for growing vegetables and other crops. For the formation you need only a shovel for the initial design of the beds, as well as glanders for forming corners. At the end of the work, you get a small embankment of a triangular shape, which has many positive characteristics.

If we talk about the size of the beds, then it is worth starting from the agricultural technology of the crops that will be grown there, the size of the root system, and other requirements. On average, the height of the beds is about 15-30 cm, in width it can be up to 70 cm. It is not worthwhile to tighten the soil strongly, it will coalesce after a few waterings.

High bulk beds in the form of a trapezoid

The principle of creation is the same, the only difference is form. In appearance, the bed should resemble a trapezoid, that is, its upper plane should be a straight line, not an angle. And, if the width of the ridge, like the triangular, is about 70 cm, then the upper part should be 20-30 cm wide.

Side slopes can be covered with boards, but quite often the embankments are left without shelters. This is necessary for a better and faster heating of the soil, as well as for its high-quality aeration. Mulching of embankments is also possible, which positively affects the quality and properties of the soil.

Multi-tiered high beds and gardens

Such options are used specifically to save space in the country. By building a multi-tiered structure, you can grow several crops with it at once. But you should be careful about the conditions of detention. For example, to plant stronger cultures on the lower tiers that prefer shade and coolness, on the upper tiers - heat-loving crops that need a lot of sunlight, and so on.

Layered structures are created by welding or bolting metal fittings, pipes, elbows or shaped pipes. Boxes or special containers are installed on the finished ridges, which are loaded with a fertile substrate.

Decorative tall gardens

The main difference from the classics is the specificity of plants planted in containers or on embankments. Most often, these are ornamental plants, flowers and herbs, undersized shrubs, evergreens and berries. In this way, you can even grow bonsai and similar masterpieces, but you have to be careful and patient with the whims of such long-growing “pets”.

In addition, there are real decorative gardens with vegetable crops, when cabbage, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, greens and other crops are grown according to a certain pattern, in the form of an exclusive flower bed or flower garden, bringing exactly the bright appearance to the landscape.

How to build a standard high garden in the country

We examined such schemes several times in detail when it came to vertical beds (some principles intersect), as well as to retaining walls. But this does not stop us, because today it is required to tell each reader of our site about practical and comfortable gardens that really multiply the harvest.

Characteristics and design features

Initially, you need to correctly set the height of the beds. If it is a loose bed, which is formed on high-quality soil, 15 cm will be enough. If it is completely isolated, then the height should reach 25-30 cm. This is the optimal soil layer for growing most summer cottages. For some of them, of course, much greater height is required.

It should be noted that for warm compost ridges it is necessary to increase the height to 40-50 cm. Even if these are early spring plantings, the temperature inside the layer will remain at the proper level, compost will help warm the root systems of the planted plants.

To tell you the truth, there are no restrictions in setting the height, in addition to the fact that the plants should be comfortable to develop, and it is convenient for you to take care of them.

Now it’s worth talking about length and width. The first parameter is not so important for plants and convenience, and the ridge can be stretched to the entire plot of the garden or palisade, as it will be convenient for you. But the width is a serious parameter. We said earlier that the width can be up to 70 cm, but on average it is about 50-70 cm. This is the optimal width for planting one row of plants. If you want to plant plants in two rows, the width can be increased to 80-100 cm. It’s not worth it anymore, because it will be extremely inconvenient to look after a too wide bulk garden.

Remember, crumbling slopes of ridges can always be strengthened with boards or other materials, which we will talk about now.

Materials for construction

You can always choose a tree - an inexpensive and practical material. Boards, timber, old slats - everything can be used for its intended purpose. The only thing is that the tree is not as durable on damp ground as we would like, and its processing with paints or varnishes increases the chance of harmful substances entering the ground.

You can also use branches, thanks to which decorative wicker walls are obtained. But remember that pleasant work with the material does not add durability to it.

Straw is also suitable for beds - a beautiful, fresh and clean material of a natural nature. In special nets or bales, straw can be laid in almost any shape. But this fence does not last long, and there is also a chance of infection of clean soil with the seeds of various plants from straw.

The design of the ridges with a brick is very original and even prestigious, but immediately pay attention to its cost, and also take into account your own skills in working with the material.

To build the walls of the beds can be made of stone. Any look looks rich and original, emphasizing the landscape, but it will cost a lot if there is no quarry, ravine or embankment nearby where this building material can be obtained for free.

The formation of bulk beds is possible with the use of plastic, the most diverse. For registration and strengthening sheet plastic, thicker plates, plastic slate or even special ready-made containers are suitable. But here you should remember about environmental cleanliness, and therefore, wisely choose the material.

Tool for work

Nothing supernatural for the construction is needed, but only a shovel, glanders, tape measure, screwdriver, level, trowel, brush, as well as related products - drying oil, gravel, cement-sand mixture, mulch.

We will build from wood, or rather, from the most ordinary board or more massive timber.

Construction stages

Further, we have detailed instructions for the construction of practical high gardens and garden beds. Be very careful.

We prepare the places and do the markup. Carefully remove the sod, only the width that is necessary to install the walls of the structure.

We make high beds

We install on the perimeter, or rather, on the finished marking, the material that was chosen. Be sure to adjust the level of the bars for the construction of the walls.

We check the sizes, check them diagonally, in order to understand that we are building the design of the necessary shape.

A hammer will help in leveling and denser installation, with which you can direct the beam in the right direction, press the walls and so on.

Now we drill holes or immediately install screws that will create the necessary strength by connecting the walls into a single whole.

You can always increase the height, for this it is only necessary to install one more on top of the existing structure. Determine the height, material, and do a neat job.

It is desirable to lay geotextiles at the bottom of the ridge, but immediately it must be thoroughly cleaned of weeds. Instead of geotextiles, you can use ordinary drainage from broken brick, pebbles or gravel.

Now you can fill in the prepared soil, purchased or prepared independently for certain plants. You can also start planting and mulching.

When the bed is already in operation, you can do light decor. Remove the turf around the perimeter in the size of a brick, make a markup and proceed to design.

Masonry on cement-sand mortar, sand, other mixtures and special materials, observe the dimension and seams, so it will be much prettier.

For laying bricks, use a trowel, a level and a rubber mallet to work quickly and comfortably.

After laying the decorative edging, sprinkle all the seams or cover them with the same solution on which the masonry was made.

As you can see, the result is a rather interesting bed, which can be used as a raised flowerbed, a pretty flower garden, a container for growing ornamental plants, or for its original purpose - high garden for vegetables and herbs.

Do not forget when determining the right place to form such a bed, as well as other requirements that are necessary for a quality crop. A significant role here is played by the knowledge of the agricultural technology of the planted plants, the correct height of the beds, high-quality soil mix and other parameters.
