How to make a wicker fence with your own hands

The wicker fence has long been considered one of the main types of fencing of its own territory. The technology of its weaving is not so complicated, therefore this type of fence was the most common in antiquity. Today, it is a rather interesting element in the landscape design of the garden. In this article we will tell you how to make a wicker fence step by step.

The basis for the fence

In order to make wattle, it is necessary to use stakes vertically driven into the ground at approximately the same distance, as well as rods for weaving. If you use wooden pegs, it will significantly reduce the life of your fence - it is no secret that the tree lends itself to decay. Therefore, the most appropriate will be the use of metal rods, old pipes and other unnecessary things that may be useful to us.

Metal posts

Despite the fact that such a foundation is the most durable and durable, it can have an absolutely uninteresting appearance. In order to improve it, it is necessary to paint the posts in the color of willow vines (which we will subsequently thread). If you use a hollow pipe as a pillar, it is better to close the top with a wooden plug.

Wood preservative

If you still intend to use wooden stakes, be sure to attend to their treatment with an antiseptic. In addition, we recommend creating a drainage trench in the place where the wattle will be located, and using sand instead of ordinary soil, which will help to avoid rotting due to the fast drainage of water. If you use this method, the depth of the trench should be at least 50 centimeters - so that the structure does not lose its strength.

Markup

The next step will be marking the wicker fence. It is made depending on the thickness of the rods, which we will then use for weaving. You need to independently determine the installation distance of the stakes (fence posts). Most often (probably for convenience), adhere to a step of half a meter, but this recommendation is not mandatory. Before marking, be sure to try to bend the vine, try to experiment with the type of fence in order not to make a mistake later, when it is too late to change something.

Stick the rods to the full depth of the trench - this will create a really solid structure. At the end, as well as at the beginning of the fence, the poles are best placed as close to each other as possible, this will help create a kind of castle to strengthen the rods.

Installation of rods

The best option is to fasten the end rods in their upper part, for this purpose you can use annealed wire. Soak the rods well before weaving - this will add flexibility to them, you will have the opportunity to weave the rods most tightly.

You can also use a steam bath to give even more flexibility. This will give you much more opportunities for creativity, at the same time, durability will not suffer - as it dries, the wattle will take the desired solid shape. True, this method can not be used if the rods are already painted with varnish.

How to choose a bush for weaving

Not every shrub is as good at weaving as a willow or hazel. In addition, not all shrubs, even similar in appearance to willow, are preferred for the manufacture of the fence. The design of the vines (core) in them is quite fragile, which significantly reduces the life of the wicker fence.

Rod Harvesting

If you create a large hedge, it is better to harvest rods up to 3 cm thick, if it is a small decorative fence, then up to 2 cm thick are suitable for it. Willow twigs should be harvested either in autumn or early spring. During this period, you have the opportunity to choose the most straight and even rods, since there is no foliage. The branches should be well dried.

Coloring rods

In order to color your rods, you can use a solution of potassium permanganate, stain, iron sulfate, as well as various varnishes (preferably matte). Note that when painting the rods must be cleaned of bark.
