Growing celery in the country is not difficult, which means that we can take on board the advice of specialists, master agricultural technology and proceed to work that promises us good results.

Perhaps it’s worth starting with what culture is. It is a member of the Umbrella family, a vegetable crop and herbaceous plant that can be biennial or perennial. All over the world there are more than twenty species of plants.

Most often, in our country, biennial specimens are grown that bear fruit in the form of roots and greenery for the first year, and in the second they bloom and form a fruit with seeds.

Types of Celery

First of all, I would like to outline the main species that we will talk about today. These are celery leaf, petiole and root.

Growing leaf celery makes it possible to obtain green and juicy leaves of the plant, which can be cut throughout the entire warm period.

The cultivation of the petiole variety is practiced by summer residents, as well as large trading enterprises working with fresh herbs to get juicy petioles plants for the preparation of a variety of dishes and even alcoholic cocktails.

Growing root celery helps to get roots, respectively, which in a good season can be up to 600-800 g per plant.

Varieties for planting in the country

Each individual variety differs not only in appearance, but also in taste and in the scope of the plant.

At the moment, quite a few individual varieties are known, but the following are most in demand:

  • Celery leaf - Gentle, Kartuli, Vigor, Zakhar;
  • petiolate - Jung, Malachite, Golden, White feather;
  • root - Maxim, Diamond, Esaul, Gribovsky, Apple.

Among the presented varieties of plants, you can choose absolutely anyone, since by creating certain conditions and observing the agricultural technique of cultivation, you can get good results. But pay attention to which particular plant variety is most suitable for you, early or late.

How to grow celery in the country

The plant prefers quiet places with fertile soil and good light. But, a good crop on slightly acidic soils, in partial shade, is also quite real, in this case you will not lose in the crop, but only get some of its changes, for example, a change in the aroma of celery leaves.

Outdoor cultivation

Leaf celery is considered a rather cold-resistant plant that can tolerate frosts or even hibernate in adulthood without loss. At the very beginning of its development, it grows weakly, and this is very noticeable. This happens due to small seeds and their not very good germination, and therefore, experienced summer residents prefer the cultivation of leaf celery seedlings.

Seed preparation

In order to change the seed germination for the better, they must be prepared. To do this, the seeds are soaked in a special solution, for example, in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and left for several hours. After germinating on moistened gauze for several days.

Sowing leaf celery seeds

When the seeds are prepared, they can be sown in a special soil mixture. The best for this is a mixture of sand, leafy soil, humus and peat, a ratio of 1: 1: 1: 1. Sowing is carried out in early March, in finished wooden boxes with the indicated soil mixture. Sow the seeds should be shallow, close up with peat powder. Further, for almost a week, until the seeds germinate, you will be required to maintain a stable ambient temperature within + 17 + 20 ° С. After the seeds germinate, the temperature should be lowered to + 15 ° C. Growing seedlings requires a clearly standardized daylight hours, a certain temperature regime and accurate, timely watering (preferably through a sieve), only in this case the seedlings will be strong and suitable for transfer to open ground. If errors are allowed, greens can simply go up. At the moment when the young plant gives two true leaves, it should be dived with a pinch of the main root, which will contribute to the confident development of the root system of seedlings. Transfer to the open ground occurs in April or early May, the landing pattern is 25-25 cm.

Plant care

Celery breeding experts argue that the plant must not be planted deep in the ground so that the growth point is on the surface. After planting, the care of the crop itself is very simple and does not steal much time.

First of all, watch for the timely harvesting of weeds between rows of planted plants, as well as for systematic watering. So that the crust does not form and stagnate on the soil surface, which does not benefit celery, it is constantly loosened, preferably after each watering. But, in order to reduce time consumption, you can mulch the soil, which will enable it to maintain the amount of moisture necessary for the growth and development of the culture, eliminate the lush vegetation of weeds inside the celery bed, as well as the formation of crust. Adhering to the correct growing technology, you can harvest in mid-July - early August.

Growing Root Celery

Due to the very long growing season, it is advisable to produce cultivation only by the seedling method. Growing from seeds occurs almost in the same way as in the case of leaf celery, you only need to plant a crop a month earlier, having previously prepared the seeds well.

Also, there are certain features of growing celery root, including double picking during transplanting seedlings, proper preparation of seedlings and fertilizers to enhance growth and harvesting strength for the season.

We also recommend thinking about the type of plant itself, from which you need the root. Of course, in the growth process, you can also collect leaves, but it is worth limiting the amount of collection to a minimum, since only at the end of the season, the main organic substances from the leaves will begin to accumulate in root crops. Otherwise, a good harvest will not succeed.

Celery Root Care

Leaving is practically no different from leaving for a leafy species, which means that you loosen the soil and systematically water the plants, plant mulch on the bed with celery and remove weeds that may appear near the planting.

The agricultural technique of growing celery root has some features, and the most important of them, which can affect the quality of the root crop, is the hilling of the fetus during growth. This is strictly prohibited, it is recommended that even the removal of soil from the upper part of the root crop is recommended.

Harvesting requires some preparation. For 15-20 days before the start of the collection, it is necessary to tear off the lateral leaves of the plant, and to further dig the soil from the top of the fruit. Further, after the required period has elapsed, by about mid-October, you can begin to harvest.

Growing petiole celery

Initially, growing petiole celery from seeds to seedlings is no different from growing a leaf variety, but then, when planting seedlings in open ground, there are some features.

Seedlings are transferred to the soil, to grooves that exceed the depth of planting of leaf celery, their depth is about 10 cm.The apical bud is also not sprinkled with soil, but after the beginning of intensive growth, when the petioles begin to thicken significantly, hilling is carried out. Throughout the growing season, even several hills are possible.

Thus, juicy green petioles are freed from possible bitterness and become more tender, the cultivation method has the original name - whitening petioles. Bleaching is also supported by another special trick: 12-14 days before harvest, petioles are tied into a single bundle and wrapped with paper, and celery is removed before frost.

Thus, the cultivation of petiole celery from seedlings, general agricultural technology and harvesting are practically no different from other types of celery, except for the time of hilling and wrapping with bleaching paper.

Diseases and Pests

All the work of the gardener can be nullified by pests and diseases that attack plants throughout the ripening period. Correct them can be the correct agricultural technology, as well as prevention.

To prevent the spread of bacterial spotting, heart rot, white rot of the stem, viral mosaic, black leg and rot of the base of the stem of celery on the garden and in plants, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the basic norms for growing the plant. Among them, only timely watering, the exclusion of overmoistening of the soil, thickening of the planting, as well as the spread of weeds on the bed. Standard pests of celery can also be carriers of diseases: scoops, larvae of carrot flies, various snails and slugs, which should be disposed of in time by prevention and spraying.

Also, mixed planting, for example, with other herbaceous plants or vegetables, can be an excellent method of preventing crop loss.

Proper agricultural technology will allow you to get a good crop of celery almost everywhere. Naturally, some climatic conditions are not quite suitable for growing this crop, but then you can grow it at home - prepare seeds, grow seedlings, apply transplants, provide care and get the desired crop.
